The Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, d. José Cardoso Sobrinho, condemned the interruption of the pregnancy of the 9-year-old woman who would have been raped by her stepfather in the town of Alagoinha, in the harsh Pernambuco.
At dawn today, lawyers for the archdiocese of Olinda and Recife had prepared a complaint which ought to be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, but they dropped the step after the abortion was published.
The woman, who was hospitalized in the Instituto Materno e Infantil de Pernambuco (Imip), was discharged late last night when she was admitted again to the Amaury de Medeiros Integrated Health Center (Cisam) in the area of Encruzilhada. There, the woman took medication to start the procedure. This morning, both fetuses were expelled. Cisam didn’t report who joined the group responsible for diplomatic and the archbishop didn’t name excommunicates.
Around 4:30 pm today, Cisam physicians performed a curettage (scraping) to eliminate placental material from the woman’s uterus. Her condition is stable. The girl isn’t in danger of life and is in the recovery area of the unit. After recovering from anesthesia, she is going to be brought to the infirmary. Pre-discharge is 24-48 hours after curettage.
On the 7th, once the CNBB fraternity effort will be launched in Pernambuco, at a Mass at the Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, d. Jose will make a public statement against the disruption of the pregnancy of this woman raped by her stepfather.
